5 Tips For When You Feel Lost In Your Life

Sometimes in life, we begin to feel lost, we don’t know what direction to go in or which way to turn. It can leave us feeling confused and unsure. But it’s something that we all probably feel at some point throughout our lives. I know I have done and still sometimes do. But when I start to feel lost, I go to God.  

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105.

5 Tips For When You Feel Lost In Your Life

Although the necklace above may just seem like an ordinary necklace with a little lighthouse on, it actually has a really special meaning. I love to wear it, as it is a constant reminder of the verse above from Psalm 119, that when I am feeling lost and no matter what I may be going through, God will guide me, He will protect me and He will make a way when there doesn’t seem to be a way.  

One of my favourite chapters from the Bible is from Matthew chapter 14 from verse 22-33, where Jesus walks on the water. After Jesus fed the five thousand, Jesus told the disciples to get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side of the lake while He dismissed the crowd and went up on a mountainside to pray. As the disciples made their way across the lake and they were quite a distance away from the land, a strong wind was blowing, and the boat was being buffeted by the waves, as the wind was against it.  

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:27. 

Just before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the water. But as soon as the disciples saw Jesus, they immediately thought He was a ghost and cried out in fear. But Jesus said to them, “Take Courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Peter then said to Jesus “Lord, If it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” So Jesus said “Come.”  As Peter climbed out of the boat and on to the lake, he too began to walk on the water and walk towards Jesus. But as the wind was still blowing, Peter suddenly became afraid and took his eyes off of Jesus and began to sink. He cried out to Jesus, “Lord, save me.” And immediately Jesus reached out His hand to Peter and caught him.” 

“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31.

These verses show that when we put our faith in God, what is impossible with man is possible with God. Because Peter had faith and believed, he was able to get out of the boat and walk across the water, just as Jesus was doing. But like every single one of us, Peter was only human, and as it very often happens in our lives, fear, doubt, worry, and anxiety creeps into our lives. But even when Peter became afraid, and suddenly started sinking, he cried out to the Lord, and straight away without any hesitation, Jesus caught Peter. And this is what he will do for us too. He will always catch us when we fall and when it feels like we are sinking. 

Sometimes in life, it can feel like we are in a boat out at sea in the midst of a storm. We are being tossed about side to side and all around us, we are surrounded by deep waters. We feel scared, alone, lost and disoriented. When our life starts to go in a different direction to how we thought it would go and be, we feel lost and unable to see clearly, and it feels like there is no way out, that we won’t find our way back and we don’t know which way to turn. I personally know this feeling very well. 

But it’s when we put our focus and trust in God, that we begin to see God’s glorious light shining. When a boat is out at sea in the dark, a lighthouse will shine it’s light to help guide the boat to safety, to let them know that there is land ahead and to light the way. As the boat gets closer, the light shines brighter and brighter, guiding and protecting the boat from any rocks and danger that may be in its path. Like it says in Psalm 119:105, God does the exact same for us. 

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8.

When we feel lost and when we feel hurt, disappointment, heartbreak and confusion, when it feels as though we have lost all sense of direction and we don’t know which way to turn, when we turn to God and put our trust in Him and we ask Him for help, like a lighthouse, His light will shine showing us the way. And as we keep putting our trust in Him, like the light in a lighthouse, God’s light gets brighter and brighter, guiding us and protecting us and protecting us from the obstacles in our lives that are trying to stop us, letting us know that we are not lost or alone because He is with us. 

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18.

Read God’s wonderful promises.

The Bible is filled full of God’s wonderful promises to each and every one of us. When I have been feeling lost in my life, feeling anxious, afraid and feeling confused, God’s promises have helped me a lot. They have kept me going, they have brought me out of some dark times and through the scary times. 

God’s promises are for every single one of us. His love for us goes deeper than any other love for someone can. His love is true love. You are loved, you are chosen, you are precious, you are strengthened through Christ, you are forgiven, you are saved and you are a child of God. God will uphold you, He will show you the way, (Isaiah 41:10) He will keep you safe, He will strengthen you and He will always be with you. (Jeremiah 29:11.) 

Whatever you are facing and going through and if you are feeling lost, reflecting on God’s promises help a lot. I find that memorizing scripture is such a great thing to do. Whatever emotion you are feeling throughout your day, you can repeat to yourself God’s wonderful promises. I find that it brings instant peace, reassurance, and a reminder that I’m not alone. 

“For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:20.

Spend time with God.

Starting my day with God and spending time with God daily has helped me so much, especially during these last few months. Every morning I love to open up the Bible app on my phone (YouVersion) and open up the Verse Of The Day Stories for the day. (They recently started doing a stories feature on the app, where each day along with the verse of the day, you can watch a short encouraging video from different people talking about that verse. You also get a reflection question so you can meditate on the scripture, a short devotional, a prayer which you can add to your prayer list, and a verse of the day image, which you can save to your phone and use as your phone background or lock screen image.) I personally find it a great way to start off the day and to get right into the Word of God. 

I also like to spend time praying in the morning and to also read from my Bible. Starting the day with God’s Word, His promises, encouraging scripture and talking to Him about anything that is on my mind, helps me to feel ready to start my day and helps me to feel calmer, less anxious and God’s strength is truly amazing! 

Daily devotionals are also a great way to dive straight into the Word of God and meditate on scripture. One of my favourites is called Amazing You by Philippa Hanna. There are so many amazing and wonderful ways to spend time with God. I am a huge book lover, and a few of the books that I have been reading recently are, Just Such A Time by Lyndsay Bruce, Rejected by Lysa TerKeurst, Come Matter Here by Hannah Brencher, It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way by Lysa TerKeurst, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and Praying Women by Sheila Walsh.   

5 Tips For When You Feel Lost In Your Life

Pray to God and let Him know how you are feeling.

God wants a friendship with you, He wants you to talk to Him just like you would any other friend. He is ready and waiting to hear your voice. Especially in the past I haven’t prayed as much as I could have done, I sometimes struggled with prayer, not knowing what to say, whether what I was saying sounded silly and even putting it off until I was at home because I was either out with friends, at work or shopping.

“Prayer is simply talking honestly with God. When you don’t know where to start, the simplest yet most powerful prayer is one word: Jesus. Prayer is not about the right words; it’s about the right heart.” Sheila Walsh. 

Sometimes we can spend way too much time thinking about what to say to God and where we should say it, but God wants us to be open and honest about every single thing, big or small. And it definitely doesn’t matter where you are when you pray. I pray when I am at home, when I am out, when I am at work, when I am driving and everywhere else. And if you are not sure what to say to God, even the smallest of prayers is still a powerful prayer. 

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Romans 8:26.

As Sheila Walsh explains in her book, Praying Women, (Definitely recommend this book, it’s amazing!) prayer is us talking honestly with God, and the simplest yet most powerful prayer can be just one word. And prayer is not just about the right words, it’s about the right heart. Even when we don’t know what to say, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, even through our wordless groans. God wants our raw and honest prayers. Whatever is on your mind, however you are feeling, give it all to God.

Listen to worship music.

I always find that listening to music helps a lot! And the wonderful thing about worship music, is that the lyrics are full of encouraging, uplifting, inspirational and motivating words. It also feels really good to sing and dance along too! If I am feeling anxious, afraid, confused or I’m feeling down, I like to pop on my playlist and worship. You can find my playlist here. (I’m always adding more songs to it!)

So many of the worship songs that I have on my playlist have helped me during difficult times. I can relate to so many with how I am feeling, but instantly they bring light and warmth in that moment with their encouraging lyrics. They help to clear my thoughts and to focus my mind on God, whilst reassuring me that God is with me, He will guide me and He will help me with whatever I am feeling and going through. God’s wonderful and amazing love shines through.

A few of my favourite worship songs that I have been listening to a lot are – Broken Prayers and Fighting for me by Riley Clemmons, Save Yourself by Kolby Koloff, Dawn and Battle Is The Lord’s by Rebecca St. James, Just Like Heaven and House of Miracles by Brandon Lake, Your Love Is Forever and North Star by Elle Limebear.

Write down the things that you are thankful for.

The wonderful thing about writing down the things that we are thankful for, is that in difficult and tough times, it helps us to remember all of the wonderful gifts God has given us and how he has helped us in the past and it also helps us to remember what we have got, the people and things in our lives that make us happy. It helps to put things into perspective and can bring peace and joy in that moment. I’ve found that it really helps if I am feeling lost in my life. My mind feels clearer, I feel less anxious and any fears that I am feeling melt away. 

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” Philippians 4:6-8.

When Paul wrote the verse above from the book of Philippians, he wrote it from a prison cell. He had gone through much suffering, but he put his full trust in God, he knew that God had helped him in the past and would continue to help him. That no matter what happened God would be with him. By thinking about the things that we are thankful for and thanking God for them, it helps to guard our hearts and minds from the enemies’ lies and brings happiness during uncertain times.

5 Tips For When You Feel Lost In Your Life

I pray that you will feel God’s wonderful presence, that you will be filled with peace and joy. God is with you always, whatever you may be going through, He is with you. I pray that if you are currently feeling lost right now in your life, that God’s Word will be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path and that you know just how much God loves you and wants to help you. Nothing is too small or too big for God. In every circumstance, in every difficult season, in every tough time, He is with you. God’s love is forever. (Malachi 3:6.) God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. (Hebrews 13:8.)

I also highly recommend checking out the Alpha course. After hearing about it quite some time ago, I was so excited to find out that KingsGate Church was going to be doing the Alpha course. “Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation.” I am currently doing Alpha through KingsGate Church at the moment and it’s amazing! It’s an 11 week course which includes videos (which are about 25 minutes long) to watch and then you discuss different topics with your group.
