Social media can be a valuable tool for your church. It enables you to connect with your congregation, as well as reaching a wider audience. It allows your church to share updates, news, events, and messages with your followers in real-time. Social media also provides a platform for members and non-members, to engage with one another, and to build a sense of community outside of traditional church services. Additionally, social media can be used to attract new members, and to share your church’s mission and values with a larger audience.
In today’s online and digital world, social media is a powerful tool for churches to maintain connections, engagement, and relevance, whilst spreading the message of God’s love and truth. Sadly, many churches still lack an effective online presence or are not utilising social media to its full potential.
Here are some ways that your church can effectively use social media to engage with your congregation, and reach a wider audience today.

Share updates and events in real-time to keep your followers informed and engaged.
Social media gives you the opportunity to connect with your online audience every day by sharing real-time updates and events. This provides a fantastic way for you to connect daily with not only your congregation, but also non-members and potential new members.
Don’t forget that church is not just limited to Sundays! The activities you engage in on the days in between can also have a significant impact. They are all part of your mission.
Use social media to promote and share your church’s mission and values.
Social media is an important tool for your followers to get to know who you are and what your church represents, and by sharing the things which define your mission.
By sharing this information with your followers, you can help them understand the unique perspective and approach that your church brings to its work in the community, along with the impact that your church is making in the wider world.
Use social media to encourage others to share their own testimonies, experiences and stories related to their faith and the church.
Sharing your testimonies can have a profound impact. They inspire and encourage others while offering hope to those who may be facing similar circumstances. These stories can also help people grow in faith by showing the love and goodness of God, as well as the power of prayer.
Sharing content that people can relate to is a really great way to foster a connection with others, as well as to inspire them to share their own stories.

Use social media to connect with members who may not be able to attend services in person, such as those who are unable to come or live far away.
Social media offers a powerful way of connecting with those who are unable to come to church or who live far away, but who long to be connected to a church family, and be part of a community.
Unfortunately, I’ve had experiences where a lack of communication from a church has resulted in members leaving.
It’s important to make use of all that social media offers to reach other people. Social media allows you to personally connect with members of your church, offering them a sense of community, and providing a means for them to communicate and engage with.
Create a sense of community and encourage engagement by asking questions, sharing inspiring messages, and responding to comments and messages.
With the abundance of free online tools available, it’s easy to create regular content to help you build a sense of community through your church’s online presence. This helps to encourage others and create engagement.
Canva is a great platform for creating visual elements that you can add to your social media posts.
When you’re unsure of what to post, consider sharing a Bible verse, a brief message, or even a question to engage with your audience. Plus, don’t forget to respond to any comments or messages that come your way.

Use social media to attract new members and share your church’s message with a wider audience
Your church’s online social media presence isn’t just for your congregation, it also allows your church to be seen by people who live locally, and even from around the world.
In Mark 16:15, it says:
“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
Although many of us aren’t able to actually travel around the world, social media still provides us with the perfect opportunity to harness this. Your church can spread its message far and wide.
Consider using different social media platforms to reach a wider audience
Here are some interesting facts:
- 84% of people aged 18-29 use at least one social media platform.
- 81% of people aged 30-49 use at least one social media platform.
- 73% of people aged 50-64 and 45% of people aged 65+ use at least one social media platform.
The different social media platforms available offer a unique opportunity to target a broader range of age groups. Studies show that a significant percentage of individuals aged 18 to 29 use at least one social media platform, making it an excellent tool for expanding your audience.

Reminder
By leveraging social media, you can establish personal connections with your church members, foster a sense of community, and provide a platform for communication and engagement.

You hear a lot about how “bad” social media can be, but at the end of the day, it’s just a tool, not good or bad. I think it’s very important that the church use all the tools we have available to us, especially if we’re interested in getting the next generation(s) involved!
