I’m very excited to share with you a new book review today, and one of the latest additions to my bookshelf. I really enjoy sharing Christian books that serve as a source of inspiration, encouragement, and help to support and equip individuals in their journey of faith.
Recently, I had the pleasure of diving into the pages of Essential Christianity: The Heart of the Gospel in Ten Words by J.D. Geear, published by The Good Book Company.
Essential Christianity is a helpful, sincere, and empathetic book that addresses the very questions we, particularly those new in their faith journey, may find ourselves asking as Christians. The author extends an invitation, urging us not only to understand the gospel but also to unearth its profound goodness, freeing influence, and transformative power in our lives.

“Drawing on passages from Romans 1 to 12, J.D. Greear unpacks the essential aspects of the Christian message, showing both secular and religious people what the gospel is and how it addresses our most pertinent questions. The gospel, as he explains, is not just about life after death; it’s about reclaiming the life we’ve always yearned to live.
Whether you are exploring the core concepts of Christianity or you are a weary Christian wanting to rediscover the excitement and joy of knowing God, this warm and compelling explanation of the goodness, truth and power at the heart of the Christian faith is for you.”

The author covers many different topics such as, ‘What is Christianity?’ ‘How Do We Know There’s a God?’ ‘Why Do Christians Talk about Being Saved?’ ‘Why Does The Christian Life Seem So Hard?’ and ‘What about the Christian View of Sexuality?’ In delving into these topics, Greear writes with compassion, honesty, and a direct approach, which creates an engaging, informative, and scripturally-rooted perspective.
Reminder: It’s important that the Bible should always be our first source of guidance. We should always go to God and His Word first because it serves as an unerring compass, guiding us with divine wisdom that only God can give, and provides us with His eternal and unchanging truth.

Greear has provided us with an easy-to-read companion, helping to equip us in our Christian journey, guiding our exploration of the Bible, and for applying its teachings to our daily lives.
I feel that this book is not only great for individual reading but would also be an excellent choice for group reading and discussion. Christian books offer valuable insights into biblical teachings, spiritual practices, and Christian living. They can provide meaningful discussions and help group members in their journey of faith. Essential Christianity provides empathy and understanding, thought-provoking topics, engaging chapters, and deepens Biblical exploration.
“What the Bible writer Jude called “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3): The core. The essence. For those first Christians, the Christian faith was not a philosophy or an experience that merely “worked for them.” It did work for them – it made sense of life, and gave purpose in life, and gave peace about eternity – but the reason it worked was because it was true.”
J.D. Greear, Essential Christianity, page 15.
I really appreciate this book’s insightful and engaging content. It reminded me of the importance of returning to the fundamentals of faith. What I really loved was how the author intertwined their message with scripture. I feel that this is great for both following along with and delving deeper into what we read in the Bible.
This book would be a great choice as a gift for those who are new to faith or curious about exploring Christianity further. Or if you simply want to get back to basics.
