Book Review: The Advent of Glory by R.C. Sproul

R.C. Sproul’s The Advent of Glory serves as a beautiful and timely devotional, offering a daily opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas. It assists to deepen our anticipation for the joyous celebration of Christ’s birth, filling us with a wonderful sense of hope, peace and gratitude, making it a beautiful way to infuse the Christmas season with purpose and meaning, whilst preparing our hearts and minds.

“Join much-loved Bible teacher Dr R.C. Sproul as he explores the details of the story, helping you to slow down and reflect on what the birth of Jesus really means. Together with accompanying prayers written by a range of respected pastors and teachers, these short advent meditations will bring you right to the heart of Christmas.”

I really do love daily devotionals, and you’ve likely picked up on that from my past blog posts and book reviews! They’re a fantastic way to carve out some time each day for meaningful moments and quiet time with God. They’re also perfect for enjoying with family and friends too! Adding a daily devotional to your routine is a wonderful practice, creating a valuable pause for reflection amidst the daily hustle and bustle of life.

This lovely book features devotions by R.C. Sproul and prayers from Tim Challies, Joni Eareckson Tada, Rosemary Jenson, Chris Larson, and others. Each prayer beautifully complements the corresponding daily devotional. Each chapter also ends with a question for thought and reflection.

I particularly appreciate the deep biblical richness of this book. Sproul explores stories from both the Old and New Testament, guiding us to reflect on their significance for us as Children of God today. The author also explores key points and words from the scriptures, shedding light on their meanings. This not only encourages reflection on the author’s words but also inspires a sense of Bible study into our daily journey through the book.

Each short chapter is overflowing with depth and wisdom. I personally feel that each one is just the right length and is easy-to-read and to understand, which also makes this a wonderful book for those who are just starting their faith journey, and for those who are seeking to know and learn more about Jesus.

I love the personal touch that has been infused into certain pages, where Sproul shares his own stories, thoughts, and experiences. This book served as my introduction to Sproul’s writings, and I found his words to be refreshing, thought-provoking, encouraging, and challenging – a delightful bonus!

Overall, I’ve found this book to be truly enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found it to be extremely helpful in preparing my heart and mind for Advent. Sproul’s words are both inspiring and encouraging, and the prayers offer a comforting touch. I’m eager to dive into more of Sproul’s written works.
