Book Review: Truly, Truly, I Say To You by Adam Ramsey

Truly, Truly, I Say To You by Adam Ramsey, is a biblically, scripture-rich, and Christ-centred book, filled with insights from Charles Spurgeon, that also serves as a devotional, particularly for the season of Lent. Although it can be read at any time, it’s a great companion to read through during the weeks leading up to Easter. With 42 easy-to-read chapters, and focussing on the Gospel of John, it will help you to meditate daily on God’s Word, journeying through the Book, Jesus’ ministry, the cross and resurrection.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

John 5:24.

If you’re new to Lent, and are perhaps wondering what it is, Lent starts on the 22nd February this year. You can read more and find out all about Lent here.

“With devotions and prayers from Adam Ramsey, along with insights from the 19th-century “Prince of Preachers,” Charles Spurgeon, you will encounter Jesus through these pages and experience the transforming power and tender comfort of his voice.

These 40 devotions are ideal for Lent, with two extra special reflections added for Easter Sunday and Monday. They can also be used at any time through the year, to deepen your own walk with Jesus.

As Jesus’ words of grace and truth shine a light into your heart, you’ll learn more about yourself. But more importantly, you’ll learn more about him, as you marvel at his character and find yourself captivated by his presence.”  Truly, Truly, I Say To You by Adam Ramsey.

Adam Ramsey leads Liberti Church on the Gold Coast in Australia. He serves as the network director for Acts 29 Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Adam is also the author of Truth on Fire and Faithfully Present.

Book Review: Truly, Truly, I Say To You by Adam Ramsay

Each chapter begins by quoting some words of Jesus from the Gospel of John, followed by the author’s exploration of that passage. Then to end each chapter, the author shares a prayer or reflective exercise, and then some insightful words from Baptist preacher and influential Chrisitian writer, Charles Spurgeon.

“I pray that you will be encouraged through Spurgeon’s Christ-exalting insight and power of speech as much as I have been.”

Adam Ramsey.

I found Spurgeon’s words to be a wonderful added touch to the chapters of this book. I found them helpful and insightful, especially considering what I had just read in the chapter. I found the reflective exercises to be engaging and thought-provoking, whilst helping me to meditate and reflect further on the Word of God.

This book helps us to explore the heart of Jesus’ message to each and every one of us, and to share just how relevant each and every Word is to us today. For someone who is a new Christian and new to Christianity, this book provides a deep insight into the heart of Jesus, His character, the sacrificial love that Jesus gives, and the goodness of God. It’s also a beautiful reminder for all Christians, no matter where they are currently at on their journey of faith, as the author shares the powerful, saving, and life-renewing words that are spoken by Jesus.

The author’s language is gentle, encouraging and inspiring, whilst helping the reader to go deeper into the Word of God and His truth, whilst creating an engaging, daily devotional to help and guide the reader in their walk with Jesus, and to apply the Word of God to their day-to-day life. As the author explores each verse throughout the chapters, the reader is also taken on a journey of exploration too, through the Gospel of John.

The beautiful front cover design by Drew McCall, reminds me of the following verses from the Gospel of John:

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.”

John 10:14-16.

It is a beautiful and encouraging book to read, particularly during Lent, and it comes highly recommended.
